The Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship was first held on February 18, 1989 at the West Fargo Stockyards. It was organized by Tony Heinze and Paul Behr. The contest was initially called the Tri-State Livestock Auctioneer Contest and was to rotate among North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota. There were 24 contestants from four states vying for the title. Because of the excellent response and participation, the contest was expanded and became the Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship. The contest host site rotates among North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
The purpose of this contest is to focus on the role of the livestock auctioneer and the livestock market in what we feel is the best possible way to merchandise all classes of livestock.
